Another Time Around Semi-Finalist in Unsigned Only Music Competition

The title track from the new album, Another Time Around, is a Semi-Finalist in the Unsigned Only music competition.

From the website:

Unsigned Only is a unique music competition designed for solo artists, bands, and singers all over the world who are not signed to a major label record company or any of its affiliates, subsidiaries, or imprints. The goal of Unsigned Only is to find an outstanding, talented performer: a band, singer, or solo artist…a newcomer or veteran…raw or polished – the “gem” that needs to be discovered. Unsigned Only is looking for the total package.

Conceived of and produced by the team who bring you the prestigious International Songwriting Competition (ISC), Unsigned Only is a fresh and novel approach to other music competitions. Yes, it offers great prizes, recognition, exposure, and the chance to be heard by a group of judges consisting of high-profile recording artists and industry professionals. But, Unsigned Only also takes it a step further and puts the Grand Prize winner in direct, personal contact with the influential record label executives who are the ultimate decision-makers. For the first time ever, a music competition offers the Grand Prize winner the unprecedented opportunity to be mentored by a group of record company presidents, A&R reps, and more. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to directly network with the top echelon of record company professionals and get guidance, advice, feedback, and networking opportunities.

Official Press Release for Another Time Around Album

(Vancouver, BC) –  Victoria-based musician Nick La Riviere is a composer, arranger, performer, singer, trombonist, band leader, bassist, AND conch shell player. With those credentials it should come as no suprise that he’s well known as one of BC’s busiest musicians; and he’s about to get even busier with the independent release of his new album Another Time Around on Friday, July 24th. To mark the occasion, Nick La Riviere will be playing two album release shows in Victoria on July 24th and 25th at Hermann’s Jazz Club (753 View St.). Full details listed below.
Nick La Riviere released his debut album Too Much To Do in 2009. The jazz instrumental record featured La Riviere on trombone and conch shells, along with some amazing jazz players including: Ross Taggart (piano), Jodi Proznick (bass) and Jesse Cahill (drums). The album was well-received by music critics, including Jeremiah Sutherland at Island Jazz, who summed up the album like this: “If Nick La Riviere’s debut release Too Much to Do were a person, you’d want it sitting next to
you on plane trip because it’s just so darn entertaining. The album is exuberant, multi-faceted, humorous, outgoing and just fun to be around.”
With the release of his 2nd album Another Time Around on July 24th, Nick La Riviere prepares to take the musical world by storm with his own unique brand of genre-bending music. This time with vocals. Every song on the album is original, with a blend of influences ranging from Sam Cooke to Jamiroquai to Ben Folds to Paul Simon. The album features a dizzying array of tempos, styles, and unexpected twists – all while driving forward with a cohesive unified sound. The feature track ‘Woohoo’ is an engaging pop song that La Riviere co-wrote with Geoffrey Kelly from Spirit of The West while on the road.

“Me and Geoffrey sat down to write the lyrics to ‘Woohoo’ while we were taking the overnight ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam on a tour with The Paperboys,” La Riviere explains.  “I already had a rough version of the lyrics written, as well as a complete demo of the tune.  With his experience writing for Spirit of the West, Geoffrey came up with some clever ways to make the song more lyrically interesting.  One thing I was going for with this song was an overall cheerful sound contrasting the less happy lyrics and I think we achieved that.”
Nick La Riviere has been a working musician for years, and as a sideman he’s performed with award winning artists of many genres including: Michael Kaeshammer, Nikki Yanofsky, The Temptations, Adonis Puentes and The Paperboys. He regularly plays R&B, folk, funk, latin, klezmer, jazz and pop – pretty much everything! His musical travels have taken him all over Canada, the USA, and as far as Germany, Switzerland, England, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, and more. He also teaches
a 16 piece R&B band, leads a few bands of his own, and performs often on a nightly basis.
Look for Nick La Riviere’s new album Another Time Around set to be independently released on Friday, July 24th. And be sure to catch La Riviere live in Victoria at Hermann’s Jazz Club for two Album Release Shows on July 24th and 25th. Live Cam

I’ve added a live cam page to this site.  There you’ll find a live stream of some of my gigs… whenever there’s a good place to set up the camera and either wifi or a good cellular connection.  You can find that page hovering over ‘videos’ and clicking Live Cam on the dropdown menu. Enjoy!

Victoria Jazzfest Jam Nights

My band will be hosting the official Jazzfest after hours jam Monday through Wednesday this week. 10pm to 1am at Harbour Towers. This is the jam where the touring artists are encouraged to come hang out and play some tunes with the local players, and it’s where I had the opportunity to play with Wynton Marsalis years ago.  It’s a lot of fun and an opportunity to see some great music!

My band will be performing our own set on Sunday the 28th at 2:30pm in Centennial Square.  A free show, so don’t miss it!

This is the album for everyone who likes variety in a performance – versatile musicians who can go from playing a heavy funky rock number right to a dynamic 12/8 ballad, or a catchy classic R&B style sing along.

‘Another Time Around’ features a big sound and includes guests such as Michael Kaeshammer and Alpha Yaya Diallo. Tracks contain fun treats like a 22 piece choir, a multitude of trombones, and a string section. Juno nominated producer Joby Baker lends his talented ear to bring the mix to life. As a finishing touch the album cover features a ‘3 flip lenticular print’ – the viewer sees a different image depending on the viewing angle. Why? Because this album is exciting, fun, and different – so why stop at
the audio?
