This weekend The HiFi performs at Hermann’s, PLUS highlights from 54-40!

The HiFi
Friday and Saturday October 13 & 14 at Hermann’s Jazz Club

Happy thanksgiving everyone!  I hope you’re all having a great weekend.  I know I have, between playing some great shows with 54-40, preparing to move (we bought a house!), and all the other gigs I play… busy (but good) times! I wanted to send out a quick email to let you know about some shows this weekend with The HiFi.

The HiFi featuring Nick La Riviere, Damian Graham, ‘Art Booker’, and Ryan Tandy are at it again this Friday and Saturday! As usual, the night will feature Damian’s witty banter, awesome energetic music, top notch improvisation, and a variety of music ranging from originals to Allen Toussaint, Little Feat, Bob Marley, and Dr John covers. Reservations are highly recommended. New Orleans – West coast Brouhaha!

54-40

This Thanksgiving Weekend I’ve had the privilege of performing with big time Canadian rock legends, 54-40.  After spending a few weeks cramming to come up with horn charts for their tunes for myself and trumpet player Miguelito Valdes, it was a great couple of sold out nights at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, playing all the hits plus a tune from their new record.  Want to see a little bit of the show?  Here’s a Facebook Live broadcast Heather filmed that features a trombone solo with wah-wah pedal.  The camera is moving around little bit because of the Commodore’s bouncing dance floor and the rockin’ crowd.. still, good times!

Other Upcoming Shows

•November 17th – Hermann’s Jazz Club – The Nick La Riviere Band (the new 7 piece version with horns! Funky, fun, and a big sound!)

•October 20 – The Paperboys 25th Anniversary Performance with special guests at The Imperial, Vancouver (tickets)

•November 24-25-26 The Paperboys perform at The Triple Door in Seattle, it’s a great venue so come on down if you’re in the area!

•The Festive Brass will be doing a few shows backed by symphonies this year: December 2nd & 3rd with the Vancouver Island Symphony, December 9th with the Victoria Civic Orchestra.. for a full listing of shows (which I’ll update as soon as I have a chance) click here.

Follow Me To New Orleans

What happens when a musician goes on vacation? Check out these videos to follow me and my wife Heather to New Orleans. In part one we arrive in New Orleans and get a quick look at the city and Bourbon St, before boarding a cruise ship to visit Jamaica, Mexico, and Grand Cayman. And of course I sit in with the band on the ship. In part two we check out what New Orleans has to offer, I sit in with a bunch of bands including Delfeayo Marsalis, and we check out the New Orleans Jazz Festival where I get a backstage pass for The Meters and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. There’s also some great shots of tons of other festival performances, and of course Stevie Wonder’s set, which included some unexpected crying, an anti-Trump speech, and Stevie Wonder DJ-ing.

Off to Denmark!
In August I’ll be off to Denmark to play with The Midnights. The Midnights is the professional band that evolved from The Vic High R&B Band, which I’ve written about 80 charts for with singers, horns, and rhythm section.

August 17 – Aalborg Blues Fest
August 18 – Frederiksberg Café
August 19 – Drop In Cafe, Copenhagen
August 20 – Bjarne Rassmusens, Malov
August 23 – Bakken – apparently it’s the world’s oldest amusement park, first opened in 1583
Aug 25-27 – Ballerup Musik Festival

Thanks very much for keeping in touch and allowing me to let you know about what’s going on! I hope to see you on July 21st at Hermann’s!

Video: Highlights from my septet on Galiano Island PLUS off to New Orleans

Recently my septet was invited to perform on Galiano Island.  We had a great time playing, and I put together a short video with clips of a couple songs – and of course the obligatory shots from my drone.

AND my wife and I are off to New Orleans this Friday.  We’ll be taking a cruise (on Carnival – I played in the show band on that cruise line a long time ago), and then hanging around New Orleans and checking out the jazz fest, which we’re really excited about.

For those trying to book me for gigs, we’ll be back on May 9th and I’ll be trying to minimize email time while we’re away, but if you need an answer before May 9th you can try calling me (my phone won’t be on during the cruise but will be on the rest of time and I can take calls without an extra charge) or emailing me with the subject ‘urgent – gig’.

New video: Trombone Supertramp!

You’ve probably seen my trombone video of Jump by Van Halen, or my Professor Longhair mashup featuring conch shells, wine glasses, beer bottles, and more.. and there’s also my trombone version of La Vida Es Un Carnaval by salsa queen Celia Cruz…. well, today I’m putting out a brand new video in my quest to make trombone work on any song.  Dreamer by Supertramp!   Check it out!

And don’t forget, THIS THURSDAY, 7:30pm, at Hermann’s Jazz Club The Nick La Riviere Septet will be performing.  It’s going to be an awesome show featuring Brittany Iwanciwski & Ann Fraser on violins, Silvina Samuel-Lowden on cello, Sean Drabitt on bass, Chris Van Sickle on piano, and Damian Graham on Drums.  We’ll be playing all my wild jazz arrangements that feature the string section.  I’ll also do the conch shell thing, and you might even see a recreation of some of these wild videos live (hint: there may be wine glasses).  I hope to see you there!  Make a reservation here.

Coming up April 6th and 8th, my septet at Hermann’s and on Galiano Island, PLUS follow me on tour to Luxembourg!

The Nick La Riviere Septet
Thursday, April 6th: Hermann’s Jazz Club
Saturday, April 8th: Galiano Island

On April 6th my septet will be playing at Hermann’s Jazz Club. The band features Brittany Iwanciwski and Ann Fraser on violins, Silvina Samuel-Lowden on cello, Chris Van Sickle on piano, Sean Drabitt on bass, and Damian Graham on drums. Aside from trombone, I’ll play some conch shells, wine glasses, and who knows what else. The music will include something for everyone. The night begins with a focus on well-arranged jazz; tunes by Charlie Parker, Chick Corea, JJ Johnson, as well as some originals. As the evening goes on, the set will include some Joe Cocker, Dr John, and of course, more originals – and insanity (trombone Van Halen?). This band is a ton of fun, and I love performing with the rich musical tones of string section. Don’t miss it!

Reservations can be made here.  Note that this show starts a little earlier than my usual Hermann’s shows – 7:30 instead of 8.

The band will also perform on Galiano Island on April 8th presented by the Galiano Concert Society.  More info at this link.

Follow me to Luxembourg!

I recently performed at the Zeltic Fest in Dudelange, Luxembourg with The Paperboys from Vancouver.  Using my iPhone, a GoPro, and a drone, I made a tour blog video that turned out quite well.  Aside from clips of the performance, you’ll also see some great scenery in Dudelange, Luxembourg City, and Metz (France).  Don’t let the low number of YouTube views make you think no one’s seen this – I’ve mainly been sharing a separate upload direct to Facebook, which has 1800+ views.

Thanks everyone for your support, and I hope to see you at Hermann’s on April 6th!

Luxembourg show announcement!

I’m very happy to announce that I’ll be playing with The Paperboys for the Zeltik Festival in Dudelange, Luxembourg on March 11th.  Yes, it’s a long way to go for a one-off gig, but I plan on making the most of it, with a trip to France the day after the gig before I head home.. so you know what that means (or at least anyone who’s been following my Facebook lately) – an awesome tour/travel blog filmed with the help of my drone.  I’m really looking forward to the trip, and there’s some other big (longer) overseas tours being booked for later in the year too which I’ll post about later.
